Students seek employment at expo

Students looking for career opportunities had the opportunity to attend the Employment Expo in the Mall on April 10.

The Expo was comprised of 43 booths from all manners of business in Hays and the surrounding areas, with the intention of exposing job opportunities to the community. The booths represented diverse areas of work including manufacturing, communications, medical, and more.

Students prepare for state forensics

Following months of hard work and competition, 11 students qualified for the Forensics State Championship tournament on May 2-3 at Shawnee Heights High School.

Those qualified include senior Michal Bernasconi in humorous solo; senior Mike Goodrow in extemporaneous speaking; senior Rachel Schultz in prose; senior Stephanie Roberts in dramatic solo and duet acting; senior Devin Ermoian in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; senior Patrick Waring in poetry; junior Michael Raven in extemporaneous speaking and impromptu; junior Alex Muirhead in prose; junior Lexi Copeland in prose and duet; junior Kyle Haley in extemporaneous speaking; and sophomore Amaris Morin in prose and poetry.

KIOGA conference takes place at Hays High

On April 17, Hays High Students experienced the annual conference of KIOGA (the Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association). Hays High was the home to this year’s conference which included presentations in the lecture hall and other locations and extended through Friday. This conference was available to anyone who wished to gain information and to learn about potential jobs.

Two local, independent oil people, Dan Schippers and Darrel Herl, asked Hays High if they could come and inform the students of the importance of the oil industry and the possible careers if offers. The purpose of this presentation was to try to entice new workers into the oil program as the majority of the oil field workers are nearing retirement age.

Chamber Singers perform at benefit concert

On April 19, the HHS Chamber Singers, Singing Irish Falcons, and Shawnee Mission East Chamber Singers held a benefit concert for First Call for Help. The concert was held at the First United Methodist Church in Hays, and all proceeds were made through generous donations. At the end of the concert, $1,868 was raised for First Call for Help.

The idea of holding a benefit concert was developed by the directors of the Singing Irish Falcons and Shawnee Mission East Chamber Singers, Johnny Matlock and Tracy Resseguie, respectively.

Business students place third at competition

Fort Hays State University held their annual business competition on April 9. Eighteen schools from all over Kansas participated in several events. 

Twenty students from Hays High competed in 15 different events.  Hays High brought home 24 awards.

“I am very proud of everyone,” said teacher Suzanne Stark.

In beginning accounting, senior Caitlin Braun placed third, sophomore Amanda Groff placed sixth and junior Crystal Hutchison placed eighth.
