Book Club Spotlight

Food, engaging conversation and great literature: these are just a few examples of what goes on during Book Club. Most people know that there is a book club, yet many aren’t aware of what happens at an average meeting.
“Sometimes we meet outside of the building at a local coffee shop,” Book Club sponsor Elizabeth Harris said. Sitting down in a comfy chair, relaxing with a delicious coffee in one hand and that month’s book in the other, students discuss the book.

Book Club is getting underway and is looking for new members. For information, contact Librarian Elizabeth Harris.
Book Club is a non-threatening environment where students can openly discuss the book, without being in a classroom setting.
“I like to challenge you guys,” Harris said “I pick challenging reads, books you wouldn’t otherwise choose, to expose you to different types of literature.”
“I like Book Club, because it gives us the chance to read something we would not normally read,” junior Trey Desaire said.
Don’t be threatened with the thought of having to read a book you won’t enjoy. Every other month is a free read, where you read a book of your choosing. This way, others can hear about the book you read and see if they too would be interested in reading it. Also, it’s okay if you don’t have time to read that month: just start again with the new book when you get time.
“This year I am planning on doing something with food,” Harris said. “We might be pairing up with International Club to read a book and cook some food.”
In past years, Book Club has entered the Eatable Book contest at the Hays Public Library, where they make desserts themed around a book.
You don’t even have to buy the book yourself. Harris gets multiple copies of the books that are checked out through the library. Meetings are on the third Thursday of the month and the club size is usually small.
“Friday during seminar we are going to pass out the new book. Until then you will just have to wait,” Harris said when asked book this month’s book.
