Everyone’s heard it, everyone knows the tune, and many artists have covered the song as well. Hallelujah Chorus happens to be popular throughout many schools and congregations.

“When I got here eight years ago, I was told it had become tradition for the choirs, the band and the orchestra to play and sing this together for the Winter Concert,” Vocal Instructor Elise Peterson said.

Traditions for the musical department are a big deal to many of the teachers. The teachers don’t make the students sing or play this for no reason at all.

Some students say it’s a song that’s annoying and don’t see the need to sing the Hallelujah Chorus every year, but they enjoy embarrassing the beginner singers with the sudden silent stop at the end of the chorus.

“I like exposing singers to the Hallelujah Chorus,” Peterson said. “It’s a classic that’s been around since the 1500s. It’s one thing to have students listen to it and another just to sing it, but it gains a special place in their hearts. I think many of them look forward to do it, too.”

In the end, the Hallelujah Chorus isn’t just another song, but it has a solid meaning to the teachers and students that play and teach it.

The Winter Concert is at 7 p.m. tonight at Beach Schmidt Auditorium.
