It is 12:26 a.m. on Saturday morning, and you’re hanging out at the park with your friends when you see a policeman pull up. He approaches you and your friends, wanting to know if you have parental knowledge and consent to be out this late. Puzzled, you wonder why it even matters.

“The City of Hays curfew applies to minors under the age of 18,” School Resource Officer Dawson said.

Minors are not allowed to be out in any public place inside of Hays between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and midnight to 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to the city ordinance.

Dawson said that if minors are caught out past curfew, the officer will notify parents and make sure the minor is properly supervised.

. “I don’t believe there is a big problem of unsupervised minors in Hays, but I do believe it is an important issue to make sure minors are properly supervised,” Dawson said.

The Book Club entered into the Edible Book Festival hosted at the Hays Public Library on April 1. Students from the club entered two entries based off of the books “The Hunger Games” and “Three Cups of Tea.”

“We took a book we read from Book Club, met, and brainstormed ideas to illustrate our chosen books with food,” librarian Elizabeth Harris said. “Everything has to be hand-made, even though we used peeps.”

The Edible Book Festival is an annual event occurring internationally. They’re two divisions including adult and youth. This is the second time they’ve entered.

“There were many clever ideas,” Harris said. “We used Peeps, Life savers and donuts for the different districts in ‘The Hunger Games’ and we used pita bread connecting to the character Peeta in the book.”

The entries won the “Eye-Candy” award for most colorful and attractive.

State Career Development Events in Manhattan are approaching rapidly for FFA members. They recently competed in their last and final district event for the year in preparation for their state contest.

District livestock was early in the morning with around 85 students participating in the senior division and 60 students in the freshman division.

The contest was very successful for several members. Junior Chelsey Smith placed seventh in the senior division with only 15 points separating her and the first place finisher from Smith Center.

However, in the freshman division, freshman Paige Fischer took fourth and freshman Hannah Talkington took eighth.

In the afternoon contest of agronomy, the team took second and was beat out by Hill City. Members of the agronomy team were seniors Sarah Luedders and Aaron Wolfe, juniors Keegan Olson, Cody Theide, Rich Lyon and Smith, and sophomore Brandon Williams. Three of the seven team members finished in the top 10. Smith took third, Olson was sixth, and Luedders was eighth.

In the horticulture contest every member of the team finished in the top ten for a first place team win. Olson was second, followed by a close third from Luedders. Fifth went Leo Dreiling and seventh went to Wolfe.

Web Team took a trip to visit the Google site in Boulder, Colo. During spring break.

Google at Boulder focuses on three main areas: Geographic and 3D, Google Applications, and Systems Infrastructure. The work place includes a recreation room with a rock wall, Rock Band and ping-pong table.

“They have working form that allows their employees to set aside 20 percent of their work day to go towards something they want to work on,” Web Team adviser Corina Beam said. “G-Mail and Google Earth were both ideas born within the 20 percent time.”

The Web Team also enjoyed a free day chilling out and skiing at the Eldora Ski Resort.

“Skiing was a blast.” senior Katie Carmichael said. “Google was cool too. The employees were very laid back. All their food was catered, there was rock wall, and their cubicles were decked out in decorations. It would be awesome to work there.”
