“The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie, is a highly entertaining and insightful book. This book takes a look into the life of 14-year-old Junior, an Indian boy born with water on the brain.

Jr. is very smart for his age and fears growing up and falling into the same old pattern of his fellow Indians. Drinking, getting into fights, using all their money to buy beer, and drinking again.

Jr. after having been told by one of his teachers that he had the potential to be great and to do something with his life, decided to switch schools. He decides to go to the all-white school in the neighboring farm town.

Kids in this town are racist towards Jr. One day, Jr. just can’t take it anymore and hauls off and slugs one of the popular boys at school. This in the end is just the beginning to him getting the respect he deserves. This book is filled with wit and amazing outlook and hope for life.

I would recommend this book to anyone. It will bring you almost to the point of tears, then with one sentence have you laughing, wondering how Jr. could be so clever, caring, and hopeful in such a dark and unhopeful point in his life.
