A recipe made up of one tablespoon of mystery, one teaspoon of romance, one cup of thrill and many other ingredients are all mixed together to make Alfred Hitchcock’s Masterpiece “Vertigo.”
Taking place in San Francisco, California, this movie stars John Ferguson (James Stewart) a police officer that is acrophobic and struggles with vertigo because of it. When deciding to retire and take some time off, a friend of his asks him to follow his wife, Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak), around for he fears that she is in danger.
Throughout this journey of Ferguson following Elster, Ferguson searches for answers that only Elster can give him about her daily life. Not long after meeting and talking do they find themselves falling in love with each other.
Then a tragic thing happens in the story and Ferguson finds himself in great depression. He comes across a look alike and seems to be drawn to her for she is Madeleine’s look-a-like. When his police officer skills begin to kick in, he starts to unravel a huge mess.
I would recommend this movie. Like most classics, if you can look past the poor effects and think back in the time period that it was made, it was a great movie.
I was sitting on the edge of my seat at times wondering what exactly was going to come next. It had that great mystery feeling to it and tied in some romance and a few lines that had me laughing.
Based off of this movie, I would definitely be interested in possibly looking into watching some of Hitchcock’s other films.
