Where the Wild Things Are

Some of the best memories a person can have of their childhood are the books they read. Nowadays many of those books we read as children are being turned into full length feature films, such as the recent release “Where the Wild Things Are”.

Although only based off of a 34 page book, the writers were able to mold the story into one more complex than you might imagine for a kid’s movie.

The plot revolves around Max, a young boy with a wild imagination, and his trip to a faraway island where the wild things are. Max believes that everything will be alright once he joins his new family as their king, but soon finds out that no matter what family you end up with, wild and hairy or calm and clean, there will always be problems.

The story is darker than many parents would want it to be for their children. Max has many problems with both his human family and his wild thing family. They get into fights that most kids would not understand. The depressing arguments might leave some dissatisfied and bewildered.

No matter how sad the movie is though, the imagery is amazing. The CGI blends perfectly with the animatronic wild things that were made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. It’s a challenge to tell what’s real and what is computer generated. The characters seem so real that it’s easy to get attached. Through the CGI, animatronics, and other filming techniques you can feel as if you’re right there with the wild things.

The soundtrack to “Where the Wild Things Are” is what you would expect it to be. The music is for the most part fast paced, loud, and almost otherworldly. A perfect match to the scenes and imagery.

Though the movie is dark, one can get caught up in the magic of the film. Fans of the book may have very different feelings by the end. There are some who would be depressed and upset with the majority of the film, while others would find it touching and leave with a rather warm feeling. No matter how you feel at the end it’s impossible to disagree with the fact that this movie is like nothing you’ve ever seen.
