For the first time in school history, the Guidon earned an All-Kansas Award for Excellence in Newspaper and Journalism from the Kansas Scholastic Press Association.
The honor was bestowed upon the Guidon last spring.
Out of the five categories – Design, Visuals, Coverage, Leadership and Writing – a newspaper must receive an “All-Kansas” award in at least three in order to be an All-Kansas newspaper. The Guidon received “All-Kansas” in all of the categories except Visuals, which got an Award of Commendation.
The judge commented on all categories positively, even saying, “Technically, you were close to All-Kansas on [Visuals].”
Nine students also qualified to continue on to the state level after the regional competition on Feb. 19. Eight students entered to compete in Editing, Advertising, Feature Photo, Headline Writing, Sports Photo and Yearbook Layout.
Those who placed were Laila Jaradat, Advertising; Whitney Gertsner, Feature Photo; Christina Carreira, Headline Writing; Calie Borthwick, Sports Photo; and Heather Werth, Yearbook Layout. As a result of the five state placers, Hays High earned third-place honors in the Sweepstakes competition in Class 5A.
“I am very proud of my students for practicing outstanding journalism,” said journalism instructor Bill Gasper.
