The Western Kansas Orchestra Festival took place on Nov. 20 and 21 in Garden City.
This festival was optional and was not an auditioned orchestra. Seventeen out of the 27 students of the orchestra participated in this event. This festival is for grades 7-12.
This is an annual event in which eight schools in western Kansas get together for these two days, making about 500 string players total. They divide into four orchestras; two middle school groups and two high school groups. The students rehearsed Friday and Saturday, and then performed Saturday afternoon. The conference brings in guest conductors each year.
Although students do not have to audition to be a part of this orchestra, the students can audition for chairs. Last year out of four orchestras, three concert masters were from Hays. A concert master is the first chair in the section. Senior Ben Drabkin auditioned for and was awarded the concert master spot for the third year in a row.
“This is an annual event we really look forward to,” director Joan Crull said. “We have a lot of fun, friends, and great music.”
