The International Club met Dec 10 for its Christmas party. The members enjoyed cookies, hot cider, and a variety of games, including charades and a game from Australia. The main topic of the night, however, was this year’s International Club fund raiser.

The members are joining in fight to bring education to Pakistan and Afghanistan through the organization Pennies for Peace. The organization was inspired by Greg Mortenson’s book “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace, One School at a Time”.

The true story tells of how Mortenson attempted to climb a mountain in Pakistan. Failing to climb the mountain, Mortenson ended up in a small village where he was greeted and taken in by its people. To thank the people for their kindness, Mortenson promised to build a school in the village.

“If we could have just built an education for Afghanistan, instead of invading it, I wonder what could be different,” International Club sponsor Ann Adams said.

There have been 130 school successfully established in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which have provided education to over 51,000 students. With these schools, Mortenson wants to build peace through books, not bombs.

The International Club has placed collecting jars at various places throughout the school and community. In the school there are jars in the library, office and room 117A, and they will remain in those locations until the end of February.

“A penny is really nothing over here, if you see one on the ground you don’t even bother to pick it up, but on the other side of the world a penny will buy a pencil,” Adams said, “That’s much better than a stick in the dirt.”
