Tennis team takes 2nd; to host own meet Sept. 3

Juniors Whitney Hickert and Abbey Homburg finished 4-0 in number two doubles competition to lead Hays to a second-place finish at the Cimarron Invitational Tennis Tournament on Aug. 27.
The Indians scored a team total of 29 points in their season opener to finish behind Tribune with 38. Third went to Ulysses with 12, followed by Cimarron and St. John with 10 and seven points, respectively.
Taking second in number one singles was sophomore Paige Lunsford, who compiled a 3-1 mark on the day. Sophomore Hanna Pfannenstiel also posted a 3-1 mark to take second in number two singles.
“Both Paige and Hanna are making an adjustment to playing singles this year after competing together at doubles last season,” Coach Chris Channell said.
Placing fourth in doubles action were seniors Anne Bannister and Renee Kippes with a 2-2 mark. Shelby Dinkel competed in her first tennis meet in number two singles and ended with a 2-2 record enroute to a third-place medal.
Hays High will host their Varsity Invitation on Sept. 3 at the Hays High and the City tennis courts starting at 3 pm.
