Two medal to lead golfers to 3rd at Salina

Junior Sami Hobson took eighth and sophomore Alexyss Leiker ended up in 10th to lead the golf team to a second-place finish at the Salina Central Invitational on Sept. 8.

Hobson negotiated the par 35 course with a four-over 39, four strokes off the winning pace of 35 set by Cassie Lowell of Concordia. Leiker was one shot behind with a 40. Senior Katie Carmichael shot a 45, followed by sophomore Kaycee Beilman with a 47. Rounding out the varsity were sophomore Natalie Bethel and junior Tara McGuire with a 47 and 54, respectively.

As a team, the Indians fired a nine-hole total of 171, well behind first-place Manhattan with a 154. Third went to Salina South with a 176. Other teams that competed were Russell, Concordia, Topeka West, Newton, Emporia, Bennington, Salina Central and Great Bend.

In junior varsity play, freshman Taylor Herman fired a 26 to take first in a par three tournament. Freshman Courtney Hess was two strokes off the pace with a fifth-place total of 28.

Next action for the varsity is set for Sept. 1o at Dodge City.
