The cross country team competed at regionals on Saturday at Centennial Park in Newton. The regional determined state qualifiers by having the top 3 teams qualify as well as the top ten individuals and the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams if not already in the top ten.
The girls ran first with no Hays runners medaling. The girls team took seventh out of eight teams in the regional and had no individuals qualify for state. Liberal (first), Valley Center (second), and Great Bend (third) qualified as teams.
The boys ran next with junior Derek Drees taking fourth in a time of 17:16. The boys team took third place qualifying them for state which will take place in Lawrence next Saturday at KU’s Rim Rock Farm Course. Fellow WAC teams Great Bend (second) and Liberal (first) also qualified from the Newton regional.
“To know that the team is going to state feels amazing.” junior Josh Brungardt said, “Last year I wanted to go to state so bad as a team but we were a couple points short. This year I get to go with my team and it feels great.”
