The boys basketball team took on the Abilene Cowboys on Feb. 14. The Indians lost to the Cowboys 48-44 in a nail bitter.

Both teams didn’t shoot well from the field, Hays shooting 31 percent and Abilene 36 percent.

The Cowboys started off the scoring with a layup but was followed by a three-pointer from Hays.

The first quarter finished with Hays on top 12-11. The Cowboys would take the lead to start the second quarter, but the Indians answered back with a couple 2 pointers and lead by as much a three.

Abilene regained the lead but not hold on to it with Hays leading 20-18 at the end of the first half. Going into the third quarter Hays would take the largest lead of the night, leading by nine points.

The Cowboys would chip away at the Indians’ lead, making it 35-34 at the end of the third quarter. The Indians would lead by three at the start of the fourth quarter and that would-be Hays’ last lead of the game.

Abilene took a six-point lead, their largest of the night. Hays brought the game within two points but could pull off the last comeback need losing 44-48.

Hays’ record falls to 10-6, their next action will be Feb. 17 in Garden City.
