Twelve Hays High journalism students qualified for state competition in 16 events at the Class 5A-6A Regional Journalism Contest in Wichita on Feb. 25.
To qualify for state competition, which will take place on May 1 in Lawrence, students had to place in the top six in one of 19 different journalism competitions. Journalism adviser Bill Gasper said the 16 qualifications is the highest number in his five-year tenure at Hays High. Overall, 18 students had a total of 33 entries.
“I am extremely pleased with the outcome,” he said. “We were among the leaders with the total number of qualifications, along with Bishop Carroll, Kapaun and Wichita East. I am very fortunate to have a large number of talented students who are willing to put the work in to be among the best student journalists in the state.”
