Jobs teachers had as high school students

Whether it was flipping burgers in fast food restaurant, babysitting, or working for a parent, everyone remembers the first real job they had.

Obviously, a person cannot just have the job they most desire without starting off somewhere they don’t want to stay. Like most people in today’s society, teachers began working in high school to make a little money.

Most, like biology teacher Beth Schiel, began working in fast food to earn their cash.

“When I was younger I lived in a smaller town,” Schiel said. “So, I worked in this fast food place called ‘Dairy King’ to make some money. It wasn’t too terrible and it definitely could’ve been worse.”

Working for a parent is another common job for high school students to have.

“I worked with my dad a lot during high school,” Forensics teacher Zach Butte said. “My dad and I basically had set up our own private construction company. Then when I got older I worked for an agricultural irrigation company, which meant I had to travel as far as New Mexico sometimes for that job.”

But, not all students are actually able to work with their busy school schedule. Some teachers, like World History II teacher Matt Brooks, only worked during the summer.

“If a student is busy with school work and other extracurricular activities, then it’s acceptable not to have a job,” Schiel said. “But if they’re not doing anything during the school year, then they should probably have some way to make money.”
