New Nurse at School

As the school years keep moving, students and teachers come and go. Some stay for years, and some will only stay for a few months. But for Misty Garrison, it’s a new year for her here at school.

“I am from south Texas. Victoria, Texas. I moved here in January with my family. My husband is from Hays,” Garrison said. “I received my Associates degree in nursing from the Victoria College, and went on to the University of Houston-Victoria to get my bachelors in Biology and in Nursing.”

Nursing has always been a prevailing profession for her, but where it’s applied has moved from one place to the next.

“There are vast opportunities in nursing and at any given time you can switch fields to suit your lifestyle,” Garrison said. “In Texas I choose to work in a women and children’s center, where I cared for newborns, children, ante partum and post-partum patients.”

She goes on to say that she has always loved working with children.

“Over the years of being a nurse, I have learned that my first love will always be working with infants and children. Being a nurse has taught me that you can only fully care for others when you have cared for yourself first,” Garrison said.

After working in Texas, she then moved to Hays and applied to be a nurse here.

“I am thrilled to be a part of Hays High,” Garrison said. “The area I came from was very different, and I greatly appreciate the respectful and responsible student here. The staff here and general population of Hays have been very inviting.”

Garrison has a daughter in middle school and a son in elementary school and she’s excited for them to become Indians.

“Students here are very fortunate for the education they are getting,” Garrison said. “You really have a great program here.”
