Computer games during GPS

Guided Personal Study is a class that was added last year to everyone’s schedule. This class is intended to be used by students to get homework done in school.

While GPS may help students get some of their homework done, what are the people that have nothing left to work on supposed to do?

Computer games are not allowed in GPS, and if you’re caught playing them you could get your laptop confiscated.

Freshman Zach Wagner said he thinks games in GPS would be fine.

“I don’t usually have time to play games,” Wagner said. “But if you have a few extra minutes after you’re done with your work, I don’t see why it would be a big deal to play a few games.”

Senior Taryn Brown and freshman Taya Randle said that they also believe it would be fine for students to play games in their free time.

“Games should be allowed,” Brown said. “If a student doesn’t want to do their homework and wants to play games instead, then that’s their own problem. We’re in high school and we are all mature enough to make our own decisions on whether we are going to do our homework or not. No one should be forced to do it.”

Randle said that games should be allowed, but only if a student has completed their work for the day.

“Most of the game websites are blocked,” Randle said. “Students can basically only access educational games anyway, so I think it’d be fine to let people play on their computers.”

Junior Elley Kaus said she believes that students should have the right to choose how they use their time in that class.

“Some people get lucky and have nothing to do,” Kaus said. “It’s your decision if you want to use your time to play games.”
