Recently, Spanish teacher Melinda Cross received the 2014-2015 Dr. Earl Reum Kansas Advisor of the Year.

“The award is one the Kansas Activities Association gives every year to Student Council advisors to recognize the work they do,” Cross said. ““To win, you have to first be nominated by someone. Then you have to fill out an application in which the Kansas Activities Association chooses from.”

Cross said she was first notified around Dec. 22 about her receiving the award.

“I was then presented with the plaque at the assembly for Sweetheart candidates on Feb. 9,” Cross said. “On Feb. 24, a former student of mine, Rep. Troy L. Waymaster, handed me a recognition at the Statehouse.”

Cross has worked as a foreign language teacher and Student Council advisor at Hays High for 15 years.

“I’m very happy and very honored to have receive this award,” Cross said.
