13 questions with junior Zachary Hopp

Most groan when they think of running a ten feet, let alone three miles. For junior Zachary Hopp, three miles is just another day’s work. Hopp has dedicated day after day to the sport of cross country and therefore earned him consecutive spots on the varsity team.

1. What age did you get into sports? 

“I got into sports the minute my family gave me a ball. As a kid I was always wanting to be active and play sports rather than with toys.”

2. What all sports do you play?

“I run cross country and track. Cross country is my favorite sport.”

3. What is it you like about sports?

“I like team bonding, friendships, and the hard work you have to put in to succeed.”

4. What’s the highest honor you’ve received in a sport?

“Qualifying and running at the Junior Olympics in Detroit, Michigan and Des Moines, Iowa.”

5. Do you plan on continuing sports in college?

“Yes, it has been a dream of mine since I was little to continue competing at the next level.”

6. What colleges do you have in mind that you would like to attend?

“I have a few in mind but plan on keeping all opportunities open.”

7.What got you into cross country?

“Mr. Charles talked me into going out in eighth grade, the first year the middle school had cross country.”

8. What has the sport taught you?

“The sport has taught me hard work, patience, mental toughness, to stay humble, and discipline.”

9. What’s the best part of the sport?

“The family aspect and feel.”

10. How long have you ran cross country?

“Four years.”

11. What other activities do you participate in, besides sports?

“FCA, Math Relays, and National Honor Society.”

12. Do you think your family has influenced you in your journey through sports?

“Yes, my mom and sister are my biggest supporters. I know I wouldn’t be as successful if it wasn’t for seeing their hard work and dedication. If I’m ever in need of something or guidance I know I can count on them to be there for me. My mom is definitely my biggest role model seeing how much she has sacrificed for me.”

13. What would you tell someone thinking about going out for the team next year?

“I would definitely recommend it. There is nothing like the bonds I have made during my time running cross country. The support from parents, coaches, fans, and teammates is there for you no matter if you are the first runner or the last runner to cross the finish line.”
