A select few of the Hays High Forensics Team were privileged to attend the Speech and Drama State Championship Tournament in Topeka at Seamen High School on Saturday, May 1.

Students on the team attended various meets throughout the season in hopes of placing high enough to qualify for state. Students who achieved this were senior Amanda Schneider with her prose “Reversing around Corners”; junior Aaron Simon competing in the category of Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking; junior Ashlinn Danford with the poems “A Funeral in My Brain, Invictus, and Agoraphobia”; sophomore Aaron Cunningham competing in Impromptu Speaking; and senior Sam Drabkin with a selection of poems self-titled the “Holocaust Collection.”

Although none of the students placed at the tournament, coach Zach Butte was pleased with the outcome.

“Amanda just missed getting into semi-finals by a two point tiebreaker,” Butte said, “everyone else did well, but we pretty much just ended up in the middle of the pack.”

With a successful season at a close, Butte was proud of the five students who went to state, along with the rest of the competing members.

“I think we had a successful season and I was pleased with our last tournament experience of the year,” Butte said. “Everyone for the most part was impressive, and I hope that we can have a strong returning group for next year.”
