13 questions with sophomore Eric Adams

Sophomore Eric Adams has nurtured a passion for music throughout his life. Starting around the age of five, Adams began his music career by participating in the Western Kansas String Academy. Adams plans to attend Fort Hays State University and continue to follow his passion for music.

1. At what age did you begin to get involved with music?

“I don’t remember the exact age, but I think I first got involved with music around five. At the time, there was a weekly music camp called Western Kansas String Academy.”

2. Are any of your other relatives involved with music?

“My brother was involved with Chamber Singers, my sisters both play the upright bass and my mother used to play the flute.”

3. How are YOU involved with music?

“I sing and play the bass, along with very basic piano skills.”

4. What is your favorite musical that you have been in and what role did you play in it?

“I’d have to say my favorite musical would be Once On This Island, where I played Agwe. I loved the songs and the role.”

5. How much time do you put into practicing with your instrument?

“To be honest, I don’t usually practice. Before contest, I’ll cram some form of practice in, but it’s generally something that doesn’t happen.”

6. Are you involved in any state or regional contests for music?

“I’m heading to regional contest for a bass group and vocal solos.”

7. How has music impacted your life?

“Music actually gives me some idea of what I want to do with my life. That’s not to say I’m certain, though.”

8. Do you plan to continue with music throughout college? If not, what do you plan to pursue?

“Chances are I’m going to be doing something with music in college. The last Fort Hays musical I went to had a proposal at the end, so that was fun.”

9. Has being involved with music allowed you to create new friendships?

“Definitely yes. Trinity Callis was one of the friends I made at the aforementioned Western Kansas String Academy.”

10. What opportunities has being involved with music granted you?

“Being in music has given me the option to make it into state choir or orchestra. There might even be scholarships, but I’m not too sure on that.”

11. Is your family supportive of you being involved with music?

“Most definitely, I’d say. They often encourage me to try hard for Orchestra or Chamber Singers.”

12. What is your favorite piece to sing or perform?

“Right now, my favorite piece to perform would either be Russlan and Ludmilla for the orchestra and Wayfaring Stranger for Chamber Singers.”

13. What would you tell someone who wasn’t sure if they wanted to pursue music in the future?

“Go for it. Music’s really fun.”
