Two seniors adventure into the outdoors

Four years ago senior Jacob Alexander went on his first adventure with the Kansas Herpetological Society. Since then he’s been hooked and has recruited more people to join him. One of those people is senior Aidan Lawson.

“At the start I was only doing it just because I kind of needed something to break some of the monotony of my daily routine,” Lawson said.

It became more and more of an enjoyment for him.

“Now I do it more because I’m interested in these creatures,” Lawson said.

Traveling through Kansas, the two jam to music, outrun tornadic weather and wait out the rain in the car.

“The best part of the adventure is the people,” Alexander said. “Being a die-hard herpetologist, I can’t help but mention the amazing animals we come to find.”

Alexander has been involved with the Sternberg Museum for eight to nine years. He occasionally convinces Lawson to join him on his expeditions.

“There are two field trips that Aidan and I typically attend, fall and spring,” Alexander said. “Sometimes, when I have a free afternoon, Aidan and I will hit the roads to see what’s moving.”

The field trips consist of meeting with the society members, usually at a state lake, camping for two nights and scouring the hillside for reptile and amphibian treasures.
