Divergent book review

Divergent book review

Veronica Roth’s Divergent is the first book out of the Divergent trilogy. It is a romantic and adventure novel in one.

The story takes place within a dystopian version of Chicago in the near future. The city is divided into five factions that are each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue-Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest) and Dauntless (the brave).

On one day every year, all sixteen-year-olds must choose the faction they wish to be dedicated to the rest of their lives. They call this the Choosing Ceremony.

Making a switch to a different faction means leaving your family behind. Faction before blood is a saying used quite often to show how important the faction system is to the town.

Beatrice Prior reaches her time to make her choice. All of the sixteen-year-olds are tested to see which faction they belong to. Beatrice’s test didn’t work on her meaning she is divergent. Nobody can know that she is divergent or she could be killed.

She has to make the choice to stay in Abnegation with her family or venture off into a new faction. Initiation comes right afterwards and is extremely competitive. If an initiate does not rank high enough, they will become factionless and do the jobs no one else wants to do.

As Beatrice starts to realize a growing conflict that threatens to destroy her perfect society, she learns that her secret of being divergent can help her save the one’s she loves or could get her killed.

I absolutely loved this book and read the whole trilogy in one week. If you liked the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, you will like this book too. I love how Beatrice Prior seems like a nice and simple girl but then turns out to be daring and adventurous on the inside.

This book never was boring for me and I constantly wanted to read it. I was so excited to find a book that I literally could not put down.

The movie comes out during spring break on March 21.

I highly recommend this book and think it is great.
