Inside Out review

Grossing over $34 million on its opening day “Inside Out” came in second place for a Pixar film opening day after Toy Story 3. The film has since not lost its hype, earning over $347.5 million in North America alone and receiving extremely positive reviews from critics. The film has a star-studded cast including Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader.

Inside Out follows the life of a young girl named Riley and the emotions that are seen inside her head. The emotions include Joy, Fear, Disgust, Anger and Sadness. Riley and her family move to a new city which causes Riley distress. Eventually, Joy and Sadness are accidentally taken away from ‘headquarters’ and must find a way back before Riley’s personality is lost.

That’s a thing I love about “Inside Out”, depression in this film is not depicted as just being sad, which was a bold and amazing decision on the writers’ part. It shows children that it’s okay to be sad and that we all need sadness to thrive.

Depression is a strong issue that many children, preteens, and teens deal with and it’s a tough situation to witness and go through. Many kids might’ve not understood exactly what was happening to Riley but this plot point did not go over parents and teenagers alike. It was an important and accurate way of showing what depression feels like and the film showed it in a childish and a very Pixar like way, which made the film one of the best animated films I’ve seen.

Through all the jokes, stereotypical animated movie scenes, and the amazing animation “Inside Out” is more than just another kid’s movie, and I would highly recommend it. I thought this was going to be another generic movie, but I was mistaken. I give this movie a 9/10.
