Six students traveled to Hill City High School for a forensics tournament.

Six students – freshman Joanna Carrillo, sophomore Nicholas Zimmerman, junior Lisa Prass, and seniors Joe Factor, Tigist Bannister and Keri Relaford – traveled to Hill City on Jan. 28 for a forensics tournament. This trip, they found something a little strange.

“There was a car accident, and it hit a power pole, so the school had no power. The meet was delayed an hour, but still continued. There was no electricity so they performed with just the light from the windows,” teacher Codi Fenwick said. “That was interesting to perform with no electricity.”

Despite the unusual circumstances, the team did just as well.

“I took 5th place,” Carrillo said. “My favorite part about this trip was meeting new people.”

Even though these six people didn’t make a full team, Fenwick said they did a good job.

“Most of our team were novice, which means it was their first year and their first tournament,” Fenwick said. “We didn’t have a full team so we were not able to compete as a team. I’m very proud of everyone that went.”

There are many different sections one can perform in if in Forensics. The choices include Extemporaneous Speech, Impromptu Speech, Informative Speech, Original Oration, Oral Interpretation of Poetry, Oral Interpretation of Prose, Humorous Solo Acting, Dramatic Solo Acting, Duet Acting, and Improvised Duet Acting.

Out of those, one sticks out to Zimmerman.

“I placed sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking,” Zimmerman said.

A few of the others opinions differ, such as Relaford’s. Relaford has been involved in forensics for three years and enjoys the interactions with others.

“I like that I can interact with people and perform in front of a stranger to kind of get out of my shy bubble,” Relaford said. “My favorite part of the trip was getting to hang out with my awesome teammates.”
