The Red Cross Club organized a smoke detector sign-up that provided homes with free smoke detectors to raise fire safety awareness in the community.

Residents of Ellis county could sign up for a free smoke detector on April 1 to be installed in their homes.

Red Cross club member and junior Shyann Schumacher said she was there helping with the sign up as well as handing out packages that contained instructions for the signees.

Members were supposed to help install the detectors with the American Red Cross on April 29, but the event got rained out.

Due to the unfortunate weather, The American Red Cross installed the detectors without the help of the Red Cross club.

“I was sad that I didn’t get to help out with the installation,” Schumacher said. “It’s okay because I was a part of the drive.”

This drive was one of the community service projects the Red Cross Club did last year said Founder of Red Cross club Cori Isbell.

This year, the Red Cross club is planning on doing more service projects like this and a blood drive in Nov. and March respectively.

More information will be given out on the first meeting on Aug. 28.

“People should come to the first meeting, I think if they try it, they will like it,” Schumacher said.
