Teachers faced off against students during the Battle of the Brains on Sept. 21.

The event took place in the Lecture Hall at 3:20 p.m. Foreign language instructors Melanie Folkerts, Matthew Whitney, orchestra instructor Joan Crull, art instructor Heath Meder, science instructor Lynn Zimmerman, debate instructor Codi Fenwick, and Principal Martin Straub all participated.

Students involved in Scholars Bowl were all invited to the event.

Captain and senior Brendan Chapman says the event has been in session since he’s been in high school.

“It is basically Scholars Bowl with our team against the teachers,” Chapman said. “You have to try out for Scholars Bowl first, but then if you make it, you get to face the teachers. I know in the past we’ve had other people come in and join us for the day.”

The event had diverse types of questions ranging from math equations to translating languages to English.

Cheryl Shepherd-Adams read the questions and the buzzers were pushed if the answer was known. If the participant did not get the answer correct, it was passed to the other team. If it was still incorrect, the question was answered by Shepherd-Adams.

Shepherd-Adams believes the best part of the competition was the interaction between everyone.

“(The best part was) watching the teachers and students have fun together,” Shepherd-Adams said.
