The girls soccer team kicked off the McPherson Invitational with a first-round win against Salina South.
Hays won the games on penalty kicks, 3-2, after playing through regulation and two, five-minute overtimes without any goals.
On the first round of penalty kicks, the Cougars missed, while freshman Lacey Pfannenstiel converted to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Then South missed its second, and junior Alexyss Leiker made hers to make the score 2-0. In the third round the Cougars finished their penalty, while sophomore Megan Bird squandered her opportunity with South cutting the lead down to 2-1. After that, both South and sophomore Lauren Murphy made their penalties to make the score 3-2. South then missed its fifth penalty giving the Indians the win.
Hays plays host McPherson in the semifinals on Friday, April 1.
