Ten wrestlers earning top four finishes resulted in a first-place team finish at the Southwest
Wrestling Classic on Jan. 6-7 in Liberal.
Hays compiled a team total of 183 to outdistance second-place finisher Tascosa with 163. Liberal took third with 120, followed by Ulysses with 119 and Hugoton with 115.5. Other team finishes included La Junta, 52; Holcomb, 29; Sublette, 16; and Lakin, 11.
Individually for the Indians, sopohomore Preston Weigel improved to 21-0 on the year as he finished first at 170 pounds. Other first-place finishers were senior Derek Stiles, 126 pounds; junior Kyler Meyers, 160 pounds; junior Chander Rule, 195 pounds; senior Cash Drylie, 220 pounds; and senior Ryan Pokorny, 285 pounds.
At 120 pounds, senior Kevin Arnold went 2-1 in the tournament and ended up in second, as did junior Jake Sedbrook at 138 pounds. Third went to 182-pounder senior Brandon Weigel with a 2-1 mark, while freshman Ethan Deterding took fourth with a 2-2 mark.
Next action for the Indians will be Jan. 14 when they host the junior varsity hosts the Junior Prairie Classic. Next action for the varsity with be a dual at TMP on Jan. 19.
