Sophomores Mattie Hutchinson and Savannah Schneider fight for the ball in a recent game against the Junction City Blue Jays on Dec. 13. The Indians fell to the Liberal Red Skins 59-44.

The Lady Indians basketball team picked up a hard 59-44 loss on the road against the Liberal Redskins on Jan 7. The Indians entered the game on Saturday ranked number 10 in Class 4A Division 1 while the Redskins also entered the game ranked number 10, but in Class 5A.

The Indians had not played a game since Dec. 13 so it took a while to get fired up, giving the Redskins a 7-0 lead at the beginning of the first quarter. The Indians got everything in place and were able to juggle the lead back and forth through the first half that would end tied up 27-27.

The Indians fell to the Redskins 59-44 after a second half of being outscored by the Redskins. The Indians were outscored the second half 32-17.

“We’ve got to play fast and we got to attack the basket,” Coach Kirk Maska. “I think everyone got real tentative and no one wanted to take the shot or penetrate.”

The Indians are now 4-2 and will be on the road against the Great Bend Panthers on Jan. 9.
