Senior participates in 4-H competition

Not all competitions require a team.

Senior Jill Pokorny competed in a competition called Horse Panorama along with nine other Ellis County 4-H members on Saturday, Jan. 25. The event was held at Rock Springs Ranch in Junction City.

“Horse Panorama is a competition in which you are judged based on your knowledge of hippology and other horse-related topics,” Pokorny said. “There’s a whole slew of events you can be in.”

Some of those events include a quiz-bowl type competition, horse modeling, a poster contest, a horse-related photography contest and a speech.

Pokorny explained the hippology part of the competition.

“You are in an auditorium where they show you a 50-slide slideshow and you have to identify different diseases, parasites, saddle parts and horse breeds just by the picture,” Pokorny said. “There is also a written portion, which is a multiple choice test where more advanced knowledge of horses is tested.”

Pokorny took first in photography, being chosen from approximately ten entries. She also placed second in hippology, while another member from the Ellis County group placed tenth in the same competition.

This is Pokorny’s fourth year participating in Horse Panorama.
