Human Biology class performs blood typing test

Four students test their blood at one time.

Human Biology instructor Lynn Zimmerman gave her classes the option to test their blood for the Human Biology unit that the class is currently on.

Not all students participated, but the ones that did were able to see what type of blood they had if they didn’t previously know.

“I’m very picky about who handles the blood typing,” Zimmerman said. “We’re looking for blood clumping. If the blood clumps with the antigens, it means that your blood has that antigen.”

Junior MKilar Otte was one of the students who wanted to test his blood type.

“I had to prick my finger twice,” Otte said. “Mrs. Zimmerman had to help me the second time. Not enough blood was coming out of my finger. I think it’s because my hands are too cold.:

Senior Kelsi Martin also participated in blood typing.

“I had no idea what my blood type was before I did this,” Martin said. “First I had to sterilize my finger with rubbing alcohol, then we had to get two paper towels so that nothing contaminates.”

Senior Kaylee Brin did not test.

“I already knew my blood type,” Brin said. “I’m not really squeamish around blood, but I am uncomfortable with needles.”

Martin said she enjoyed the experiment.

“It’s cool that I know my blood type now,” Martin said.
