Fall Concert highlights vocal groups and Orchestra

The Fall Orchestra and vocal concert was held on Oct. 25 at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

Orchestra performed first, with three songs.

“My favorite piece for Orchestra was ‘City of Steel’,” senior Rachelle Lumpkins said.

Lumpkins plays the first violin and serves as an orchestra officer.

“City of Steel” was written by movie composer, Doug Spata.

“Many of the kids thought this song was about Batman,” Orchestra director Joan Crull said. “This was such a fun song to learn and practice.”

Full Cord Press, an all-boys group, also performed three songs.

“Barbara Ann” by the Beach Boys was the first song they performed. The piece was conducted by alumnus Max Befort.

Sophomore Cade Swayne was a soloist during the groups performance of “Pirate Song” by Tim Jones. The song featured humorous lyrics and a small amount of choreography.

“My favorite part of the entire concert would have to be listening to Full Cord Press,” senior Kristen Nease said. “They are all just so cute and their songs for this concert were so funny.”

Chamber Singers also made an appearance at the concert, performing three songs.

“The hardest song we had to learn was ‘Fields of Gold’,” senior Jeremy Claude said. “There were a lot of times where I had to remind myself not to sing the melody, but I eventually got the hang of it.”

Nease said her favorite Chamber Singers piece was “Fields of Gold”.

“It was just so unique,” Nease said. “But it did have a lot of hard rhythms, so it took us awhile to get it down.”

Concert Choir performed two songs during the concert.

“I like watching fellow classmates perform in the other groups,” junior Erin Murihead said. “It’s cool to see how everyone’s hard work pays off and to see the passion for music among other students.”

Chorale joined Concert Chior for a third piece, “Miserere Nobis” by Julie Wheeler. This song featured several soloists from the group.

“I really enjoy being a part of Concert Choir,” senior Hayden Sillmon said.

Sillmon is also involved in Full Cord Press and Chamber Singers.

Chamber Singers reappeared after Concert Choir and Chorale to perform the piece “Sing” arranged by Mark Brymer.

Junior Emily Ricke said her favorite part of the concert was getting to dance along to the “Sing” again.

“It’s such a fun, poppy piece,” Ricke said. “Plus, we got a standing ovation for it, which is always nice.”

Nease, Claude and Lumpkins each said music is a huge part of their lives.

“Music means everything to me,” Lumpkins said. “It helps me escape the world around me, even if for a moment. Music helps me overcome feelings and situations easier with music. Music is my life, and without music, I would be broken.”

Claude has been involved with music for six years.

“It’s a very compassionate way to express feelings,” Claude said.

Nease said she has been involved with music since she could talk.

“I can’t image my life without it,” Nease said. “I’m so actively involved in everything music related and when I sing it takes me somewhere I cant go normally. A life without music is a life not worth living in my opinion.”
