CHAMPIONS: Girls win state golf tournament

Champion.

It doesn’t matter what activity or sport you are involved in, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of finishing first.

The girls golf team experienced that feeling on Monday (Oct. 22) when it captured the Class 4A state championship at the Dubs Dred Golf Course Club in Kansas City.

Led by the all-state performance of four golfers, the Indians finished with a team total of 364, 16 strokes better than runner-up Topeka Hayden with a 380. Goodland finished third with a 391. Other team scores were Labette County 395, Winfield 406, TMP-Marian 420, KC Pipe 427, Andale 439, Clay Center 449, Anderson County 450, Frontenac 452, and Spring Hill 456.

Individually, senior Lexie Schaben led the way with an 18-hole total of 87 to earn fifth place overall. Rhian Patterson tied for ninth but end up 11th after a five-hole playoff. Also earning all-state honors were Katie Brungardt in 12th with a 92 and Taylor DeBoer in 16th with a 94. Rounding out the participants for Hays were Elissa Jensen with a 102 and Macie Mayo with a 118.

The low individual scores on the day were carded by Brittani Jensen of DeSoto and Anna Pool of Coffeyville, who both carded a 79 on the par 72 course. Jensen won the championship after a one-hole playoff.

The state title capped an impressive season in which the Indians won both the WAC and regional championships. In addition, the Indians captured five other tournament titles as well as a second, third and fourth-place finish in other tournaments.
