Poultry contest puts Greenhand team in first, Senior team in second

At a poultry contest with the participation of seven schools and 47 people, 12 freshman and sophomores placed. Of those, five of them were in the top 10. Those are freshmen Colton Vajnar, Ashton Ottley, Shannon Smith, Ashlyn Luetters, and Alea Maestas. On another team, seniors Katelyn Fross, Breanna Park and Dusty Schneider placed in the top 10.

The contest consisted of the judging of hens and ready to cook chicken on March 7. Contestants also placed eggs as to how they were – good, bad, cracked or perfect.

Vajnar’s score was the highest out of his division.

“I studied hard,” Vajnar said. “I feel really good.”

Another, Smith, finished with sixth place.

“I tied for fifth, but I got sixth on the website,” Smith said. “I’m pretty proud of it because the Hays kids did really well.”

Winners of the event may or may not be asked to be on the state judging team.

“Whoever has the most points (goes to state), it’s totally on how well you’ve done,” teacher Curt Vajnar said.

Curt believes the participants did good overall, and said they were all well behaved.

“The top four kids that are up there, if they choose, will be on the state team,” Curt Vajnar said. “I want them to place well.”
